Library Heerlen 100 years

This year the public library of Heerlen celebrates its hundredth anniversary. In commemmoration I have been drawing the many different locations of the library, now settled in the renown 'Glaspaleis'. Check out these nice pictures by a friend of mine and a nice timelaps by Submedia.

From Pier to Schophoven

My fascination for what has happened to the village of Pier in Nord-Rhein Westfalen in Germany could be explained by the idea of denial of the lives which once filled the streets and houses. Maybe we can live with demolition of neighourhoods because of cityrenovation or the phenomen of 'Rückbau' because of demographic shrinkage or other natural causes.
But here we have a village which is being sacrified for energyhunger and moneydriven motives. As outsiders we wonder why there seems to be no resistance and we register the astonishing vanishing of a human settlement. (to be continued)

Scary times

Sometimes I fear for what might happen...

Seven years ago I made 'Picknicktafels op het plein', an artwork in public space. Three picnic tables in three different colours which could be moved around on the townsquare. Underneath every table there is a drawer in which I placed during the first three years second hand books, toys and boardgames. A website documented the adventures of the tables as they hosted all kind of people and travelled the square. To day I uploaded the last photo. Will this be the end of 'picknicktafels op het plein'?
